Massachusetts Bay stretches along the rocky coast and dangerously
sandy shoals from Cape Ann to Cape Cod and gives the Bay State its
distinctive shape and the Atlantic Ocean one of its largest
graveyards. Author and longtime diver Thomas Hall guides us through
the history of eight dreadful wrecks as we navigate around Mass
Bay. Learn the sorrowful fate of the Portland and its crew during
the devastating Portland Gale of 1898, how the City of Salisbury
went down with its load of exotic zoo animals in the shadow of
Graves Light and how the Forest Queen lost its precious cargo in a
nor'easter. Hall provides updated research for each shipwreck, as
well as insights into the technology, ship design and weather
conditions unique to each wreck.
The purpose of this book is to provide a survey of the development
of urban planning in the Nordic countries, with particular emphasis
on the period since the middle of the 19th century. Attention is
given to such issues as when and how this shift from pre-industrial
to modern planning occurred in the Nordic countries, what the legal
frames were for planning legislation changed during the period in
question, how plans have been made and approved, and by whom, and
how the planning system has been organized at different times. It
also explores how planning has been affected by societal
developments in the different countries and which urban ideals have
influenced the design of the plans. The extent to which the authors
of the various plans have been inspired by projects of their
colleagues in the other Nordic countries is considered, alongside
those models and ideas from outside these countries.
**This book was originally printed as a hardback in 1991. The
paperback released in 2011 is a reprint of the original** Planning
and Urban Growth in Nordic Countries examines urban development and
planning in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Emphasis is on the
period from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, and the
authors of each 'country-study' look at their own national
developments against the background of those in other Nordic
countries well as the rest of Europe and the USA.
During the nineteenth century many of Europe's capital cities were subject to major expansion and improvement schemes. From Vienna's Ringstrasse to the boulevards of Paris, the townscapes which emerged still shape today's cities and are an inalienable part of European cultural heritage. In Planning Europe's Capital Cities, Thomas Hall examines the planning process in fifteen of those cities and addresses the following questions: when and why did planning begin, and what problems was it meant to solve? who developed the projects, and how, and who made the decisions? what urban ideas are expressed in the projects? what were the legal consequences of the plans, and how did they actually affect subsequent urban development in the individual cities? what similarities or differences can be identified between the various schemes? how have such schemes affected the development of urban planning in general? His detailed analysis shows us that the capital city projects of the nineteenth century were central to the evolution of modern planning and of far greater impact and importance than the urban theories and experiments of the Utopians.

This is the first history of Stockholma (TM)s development from
the citya (TM)s unique seventeenth-century redevelopment and
extension to the postmodern, postindustrial trends of today. While
the citya (TM)s planners borrowed the ideas from abroad at certain
periods, they provided the lead for the rest of the world at
others. For much of the mid-twentieth century Stockholm was the
model for Europe and elsewhere. Written by an acknowledged
authority on the city and Swedish architecture and planning
generally, with a wide range of illustrations, this book provides a
much needed explanation of one of Europea (TM)s great cities.
